ARCH 136 – INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL THEORY

COURSE OUTLINE

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course covers the main theoretical discussions that guide the practice of architecture, from the Enlightenment up until the 21st century.

The course delves into the principal philosophical discussions of the 19th, 20th and the 21st centuries, the architectural movements that they commenced; and the architectural practices that came forth as a reflection of those movements.

By examining these theories and their reflected practices, the course provides the student the criteria to understand and critically contemplate upon the contemporary developments of the architectural field today.

COURSE SCHEDULE:

This course is held on Wednesdays between 13:00 and 16:00 at B-323. Office Hour for this course is on Tuesdays between 14:40 and 15:30 in room B-201/2.

EXAMS:

Exam dates are announced in the course syllabus. Any change in exam dates will be announced on the announcements section of the web page. Mid-Term will be graded over 40 points. Final exam will be graded over 60 points.

ATTENDANCE:

According to Çankaya University Regulation for Undergraduate Education, Article 21 & Article 29, students have an obligation to attend to at least 70% of the lecture hours.  In practical terms, you have to attend at least 10 weeks of lecture in a 14 week semester. Otherwise, you will not be able to enter the final examination and your grade will be NA at the end of the semester. Attendance will be checked at the beginning of each lecture session (1 or 2 times each week). Late-comers will be considered absent for that session. TEACHING POLICY

Lectures will be carried out through power-point presentations that contain numerous visual examples and will include classroom discussions.

REQUIRED HARDWARE

No required hardware is needed for the course. Students are advised to take their own notes during the lectures.
